MAMARONECK, N.Y. Juliet Strauss grew up attending the Westchester County High School Jazz Festival, but this year, she will be on stage performing in it for the first time. Strauss, a junior, was one of more than 100 high school students from 25 high schools to audition for the March 16 event, and one of six from Mamaroneck High School to be selected. "It's exciting," said Strauss, who plays the trombone in the high school band and jazz band A. "I've done regular All-County before and Area All-State , and I play in the jazz band at school, but I've never done all-county jazz, so I'm excited to see how it works." Like Strauss, sophomore Miles Weinrib was selected to play in the "B" band at the jazz festival, which will be held at Mamaroneck High School. There are two bands: an "A" band and a "B" band. Both are directed by a jazz teacher, also a musician from the New York City area, according to Debbie Manetta, school district spokesperson.
"It's definitely a way to play with very good musicians around the county and it will help me progress with my musicality, and it's definitely an honor," said Weinrib, a Mamaroneck resident who plays drums for the high school's jazz band A and drum line called The Force. In addition to the two bands, made up of students from various schools, the Mamaroneck Jazz Band will perform as a guest band, along with New Rochelle High School. This is the 18th consecutive year Mamaroneck has been invited to perform in this event.
The following students were selected from Mamaroneck High School:
- Wesley Troeger, bass, A band
- Sam Riessen, guitar, A band
- Danny Neuman, piano, A band
- Max Gersh, baritone saxophone, A band
- Juliet Strauss, trombone, B band
