MAMARONECK, N.Y. Billy and the Showman saved the day when they agreed to play Monday nights Mamaroneck Outdoor Concerts in the Park series at 2:15 p.m. that day.
Usually we have knots in our stomachs about the weather, said Maria Gallagher, assistant superintendent of the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Department. No one is at fault, and things happen, but its nice to know there are people willing to work with you.
On Monday morning the band that was originally supposed to play, The Sixties Show, called Gallagher to say their drummer was seriously ill, and they could not replace him for the show. Gallagher started combing through files and found Billy and the Showman. The nine-piece band agreed to come out and play.
Somebody was looking out for us, Gallagher said. Its just a beautiful night.
Its a good thing that a show was able to come together. Larchmont and Mamaroneck residents began gathering in Memorial Park around 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. concert.
Nobody wants to stay home and cook when its hot, Larchmont resident Jim DiBuono said. They want to come out, eat pizza and dine al fresco.
One large group of friends gets together once a week and loves the towns outdoor concert series. They refer to themselves as a framily because, according to them, the groups close dynamics make them somewhere between friends and family. They brought their own table with food, a cooler and wine, and stood around in a close group laughing and chiming in on the conversation together.
We are all very lucky to have each other and find any excuse to get together, said Armonk resident and framily member Maggie Paschke.
Framily member Rich Pilla of Larchmont said, We love Larchmont. The concert is very good, especially with good weather.
The group was one of many at the concert. A lot of families brought their children, who were running around together and playing with volleyballs and beach balls in the open grass. Once the music began, some people danced, while others sat and listened.
I love music, and its a really good time, said Mary Ann Capossella of New Rochelle, who was sitting with two co-workers from Chatsworth Avenue School. We are looking forward to many more.
The concert series continues for the next three Mondays at Memorial Park on Myrtle Boulevard. The shows begin at 7 p.m. on July 9, 16 and 23. There will also be an outdoor showing of the movie The Muppets on Friday, July 27 at 8:45 p.m.
