MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Mamaroneck native Douglas A. Capasso died Dec. 14 in Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y., at the age of 64.
Capasso was born in Mamaroneck to Albert and Jessie Capasso. He attended St. Augustine’s School in Larchmont, and then Mamaroneck High School.
He was an Eagle Scout, and later listed in the “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” while President of the Men’s Residence Council and member of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity at Southampton College, LIU.
He was named one of the U.S. Jaycees Most Outstanding Young Men of America in 1979. He worked in client procurement, restaurant management and special events organizing and helped found two companies: GOOD PEOPLE, an employment agency, and WHY NOT?!, an event-planning company.
Beginning in 1980, he got involved in the helping those suffering from HIV and AIDS, eventually becoming the AIDS director for the New York State Department of Health in Albany. He retired in 2009 as director of HIV Services Hudson River Healthcare Centers.
He was also an executive and program director for AIDS Family Support Services with Volunteers of America, training in the outreach programs. He received the “Employee Recognition Award” in 2011.
Capasso is survived by his sister, Debra L. Capasso, of Harrison.
A memorial celebration is planned for 1 p.m., Jan. 26, at the Mamaroneck Volunteer Engine & Hose Co. #3 at 643 Mamaroneck Ave.
