MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Mamaroneck Dion Duran has chosen the perfect time to be raisinig his level of wrestling.

The senior won the Chris Hernandez and Edgemont tournament 170-pound titles and closed out January with a milestone – his 100th varsity wrestling win. As a result, Duran is the Mamaroneck Daily Voice Student-Athlete of the Month for January.

Duran became the third Mamaroneck wrestler to reach 100 varsity wins, joining James Watson (111) and teammate/drill partner/friend, Ben Miller, the school record-holder.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that I accomplished this milestone the same year as my practice partner and great friend Ben Miller did,” said Duran, a five-year varsity wrestler. “It’s also great knowing that Ben and I will sit high among the best wrestlers to ever come out of Mamaroneck and know that we both helped each other to get there.”

Duran would have reached the century mark in wins earlier had it not been for a pair of injuries and illness that sidelined him from mid-December through early January.

Even with the forced down time, Duran never allowed it disturb his focus. He still attended practice and helped out with the team, knowing he would be back.

“Not being able to practice and wrestle at points during the season was extremely frustrating and it definitely made me appreciate the limited amount of time I have left on the mat,” he said.

Since his return, Duran has not lost a match.

“I feel great that I am fully back on the mat,” Duran said. “What has pleased me the most since I’ve come back is that I’ve been able to control my matches.”

Mamaroneck coach Anthony Vitti was happy when Duran returned to the lineup, knowing he was ready to reach a milestone.

“Dion has the utmost confidence in his abilities and it stems from his work ethic, pride in himself, his school and his community,” said Vitti, a former Mamaroneck wrestler. “It has been a fun ride for me to witness each of his 100 wins.”
