The expanded cancer treatment center at East Post Road and Longview Avenue is set to open next fall.

Louise Kuklis of New Rochelle tried to choke back tears as she thanked hospital staff for saving her life from metastatic colon cancer five years ago. "I am grateful for the professional and caring treatment given by these nurses -- I love them so dearly,'' Kuklis said. "They watch over you like guardian angels."

Kuklis' chemotherapy treatment schedule allowed her to attend her son's wedding, witness the birth of her first grandchild and complete two triathlons. "They turned a deadly diagnosis into something I could live with," Kuklis said.

The new 40,000-square-foot building will nearly double the space used for cancer treatment and increase the number of infusion chairs from eight to 36, according to White Plains Hospital President Susan Fox. ."As our cancer center grows, we are expanding the capacity of nearly every service, from our chemotherapy treatment facilities, examination rooms and family amenities to our consultation offices,'' Fox said.

"I can feel the love and excitement in this room," Fox said during a news conference. "We're so excited to be able to expand our program."

Roach said, "It's a great pleasure to support this hospital.'' Calling himself a "cancer-free alumni of the Class of 2009," Roach said he's been 100 percent satisfied with his cancer care, birth of two children and subsequent emergency room visits, all at White Plains Hospital.

"This piece of steel represents a topping off,'' said Hospital Board Chairman J. Michael Divney. "They have reached a milestone."
