First Road Closure During Obama's Westchester Visit Announced

HARRISON, N.Y. – President Obama's motorcade will take him through Purchase on Friday afternoon to attend one of two Westchester fundraisers, which could spell trouble for those looking to get away for the Labor Day weekend.

The POTUS is scheduled to arrive at Westchester County airport around 2 p.m. Friday and is expected to leave for Rhode Island in the early evening. Purchase Street will be closed on his way in and out, Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont said. Wherever the president’s motorcade travels will closed off to the public as a safety precaution.

“He’s going to land at the airport, go down Purchase Street, and get to his location,” Belmont said. “I don’t see that much traffic happening.”

Additionally, Harrison’s town garage and its waste transfer site on Purchase and Lake streets will be closed prior to Obama’s arrival so that the U.S. Secret Service can “sweep it,” Belmont said.

“The people that do use it have been notified and hopefully it won’t be too much of a disruption,” he said.

Then Obama will then attend a 25-to-30-person roundtable event in New Rochelle.  “No parking” restrictions have been announced for the bulk of the day on Friday near Main Street and Boston Post Road.

The Purchase event, which is a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, will be at the home of Robert Wolf, an investment banker who is a big contributor for Obama.

Wolf declined to comment, having just returned from an overseas trip.

The New York Thruway Authority and Department of Transportation will be releasing a list of road closures during the President’s visit.

When Obama arrives and departs at Westchester County Airport in Air Force One, no other flights will be able to leave for 15 minutes.

As the mayor of the host town, Belmont has been invited to greet the President at the airport. He remembered Dwight D. Eisenhower visiting Westchester Country Club, Ronald Reagan spending a fourth of July weekend in Harrison and George H.W. Bush visiting with his wife, who is from Rye.

Obama last visited Westchester in March when he spoke at the site of the New NY Bridge construction next to the Tappan Zee Bridge.
