Five Questions: Katz Runs for Seat on Town Council

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Daily Mamaroneck will be compiling candidate profiles before the Nov. 8 elections. Each candidate was asked the same questions.

Abby Katz is a Democratic candidate for Town Council. The 14-year Town of Mamaroneck resident is currently a homemaker and spent 13 years installing accounting systems for advertising agencies. She is a past president and current board member of the Larchmont Gardens Civic Association, a member of the Steering Committee for the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, and treasurer of the Murray Avenue School PTA.

Why would you be a good representative in the coming term?I've been involved in a lot of community activities. I'm aware of what's going on in the town. I get out and I have met a lot of people, so I hear what people want from the town government. I have the time to commit to being a good councilwomen. I care deeply about the town, too. I've lived here 14 years. It's the only place we looked to live in when we moved out of Manhattan. And I have a strong desire to keep it going as well as it is. If elected, what are the three biggest goals you would work to accomplish? One thing everybody wants is to keep our taxes as low as possible while maintaining the services that people here want. Really keeping an eye on the budget and doing whatever we can to keep the tax increases low. I'd like to get more information out to the residents. I'd like to increase the amount of things that are put out on the town website, which they really have been expanding lately and I want to keep that trend going. People don't attend the Town Board meetings, and I think it's important that people get information on what's going on in the town. And the other thing is making sure we're providing activities and recreation opportunities for everybody that lives in the town; keeping in mind that we have senior citizens who are active, it's not just providing soccer for all the little kids, but coming up with a range of activities that keeps all of our residents happy. Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights? How would you avoid them? No, I don't see any. I think they've done a good job. The only grumbling I hear is specific people who want their specific street paved, and the town's been doing it in an orderly manner. So I don't think there's any mistakes or anything they've done wrong. What specifically makes you different from your opponent?I don't really know that much about my opponent, so I can't really compare myself to him. I don't know anything about him. I think I'm a good candidate because I think I've been more involved in the community and I think I know more about what's going on in the town. But I don't know anything about him to compare myself. What's the best part about Mamaroneck? Its location. I think it's far enough away from the city that you have a suburban feel - you've got great recreational opportunities, you're right near the sound, there's great hiking, there's access to kayaking - and you're still a half hour from the city when you want to go in.

How can voters reach you?
