Five Questions: Marcus Runs for Town Council Seat

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Daily Mamaroneck will be compiling candidate profiles before the Nov. 8 elections. Each candidate was asked the same questions.

Seth Marcus is the Republican candidate for Town Council. The 14-year Town of Mamaroneck resident is a commercial litigator with Leffler Marcus and McCaffrey LLC in Manhattan. He graduated from Colgate in 1991, then George Washington University Law School in 1994. The father of two is a alternate member of the town Zoning Board of Appeals, and a board member of the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Little League.

Why would you be a good representative in the coming term?

I think a lawyer brings a good skill set to local government. I know how to be an advocate, and I also know how to work through and solve some difficult problems when everybody doesn't necessarily agree. Right now, I'd be the only Republican on the board, and I think it would be useful to have diverse opinioins and have both parties represented and have a voice on the board, so that you actually have a bi-partisan solution to issues that might come up. I bring a perspective of sound fiscal management. And we need to work through budgetary problems on the board and try to keep taxes under control at the same time. If elected, what are the three biggest goals you'd work to accomplish?

The biggest goal would be to maintain the high level of services that we know enjoy in the town, given the fact that we already pay high taxes and we've been operating under a two percent property tax cap going forward. I'd also like to see some improvement with regard to the field situation. We don't, right now, have enough playing fields for all the different sports leagues that are competing for them in the town.Other than that, I'd like to continue what has been, what it think, is a good board that's worked in a cooperative manner dealing with the day-to-day problems that present themselves in local government.

Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights during your term?

I think the board has generally done a good job. The most important thing the local government does is provide essential services, such as highway services, police, fire, and we've done a pretty good job. In the last term they faced a very challenging budget, and I think those challenges are going to continue for the next couple of years. Rather than criticize, it's probably building on a positive record of sound fiscal management.

What specifically makes you different from your opponent?

My primary focus is going to be fiscal responsibility and advocating for the taxpayers in the town. I think my opponents probably, without speaking for them, have slightly different priorities. The voice that I would like to be on the board is advocating for tax payers. I'll let my opponents speak for themselves.
