MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Daily Mamaroneck will be compiling candidate profiles before the Nov. 8 elections. Each candidate was asked the same questions.
Phyllis Wittner, 80, is a Democratic candidate for Town Council. The lifelong volunteer has served four terms as town councilwoman and has been named deputy supervisor twice. She has been chair of the Town of Mamaroneck/Village of Larchmont Coastal Zone Management Commission for six years. The Town of Mamaroneck resident is also the chair of the Long Island Sound Watershed Intermunicipal Council, Westchester County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Why would you be a good representative in the coming term?I have the history and experience after serving what will be on Dec. 31 16 years on the board. And before that I was a very active volunteer for 10 years prior to that. I certainly know the workings of the town, its employees, and just about everything there is to know about the town.
If elected, what are the three biggest goals you'd work to accomplish?
We'd like to see revaulation go through smoothly and there's no reason that it shouldn't because we have spent a great deal of time on the necessary informational meetings and addressing the questions of the public.I would also like to see even more intermunicipal cooperation. We certainly have made great inroads. Personally speaking, I've been very active with a group called the Long Island Watershed Intermunicapl Council. That is 13 municipalities ranging from White Plains to Larchmont, and other municipalities along the Long Island Sound and the watershed. Not if, but when we have to address issues such as flooding, this has to be done on an intermunicipal basis. No one community can do this alone. That's a very important matter for the future.
Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights during your term? How do you plan to avoid them going forward?
I can't tell you what mistakes we've made. I don't think we have made any. That might sound very conceded, but a great deal of thought goes into our actions. We don't just knee jerk into a law or other kinds of requests. We spend a great deal of time researching and discussing a problem before we take action. That's the way town government has always been in my experience, and I started to go to town board meetings when I first moved here about 46 years ago.
What specifically makes you different from your opponent?
In my case, we have to divide Seth Marcus between Abby Katz and myself. You've got three people running for two seats. I truthfully don't know Seth's views on any of these questions. This has been a fairly quiet campaign in that regard. I can't answer that.
What's the best part about Mamaroneck?
A lot of things. We have so many beautiful areas; peace and quiet mainly. This is not only a pleasant place to live, but the people are generally very friendly and nice. The pace is right, it's not too fast, and yet, not too slow. I guess it's the overall environment for me.
