WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Former Westchester County district attorney Jeanine Pirro, a Harrison resident who opened an investigation in 2000 into the disappearance of Robert Durst's first wife, Kathleen, made an appearance at Durst's hearing in New Orleans, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Durst, a Scarsdale native and former South Salem resident, has been charged with murder in connection with the 2000 shooting of his friend Susan Berman at her home in Beverly Hills, the report said.

Pirro's presence caused a brief disturbance in court after Durst’s attorney Dick DeGuerin asked the judge to make her leave the courtroom because he planned to call her as a witness in the case, the report said. A prosecutor and Pirro's attorney protested and she was eventually allowed to return, the report said.

Durst is being held at a medical facility at a state prison in St. Gabriel, L.A., the report said.

Durst is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and illegally carrying a weapon with a controlled substance in New Orleans, the report said. He was found with a .38 revolver and five ounces of marijuana after his arrest, the report said.

He is now awaiting extradition on a California warrant, where he is accused of the execution-style killing of Berman, the report said.
