Frozen Sprinkler System Bursts, Flooding Mamaroneck Restaurant, Bar

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Frigid temperatures are being blamed for a major flood that closed down a restaurant and an adjoining bar in the Village of Mamaroneck on Wednesday afternoon.

A burst water sprinkler system at La Scarbitta Ristorante in Mamaroneck closed it down and flooded the basement of the Town House Bar next door on Wednesday.

A fire sprinkler system burst in the ceiling at Rosa's La Scarbitta Ristorante, 215 Halstead Ave.

Mamaroneck Fire Department and Village Public Works crews were at the scene about 2 p.m.

"I'm devastated. I'm sorry for my customers,'' said Rosa Merenda, owner and chef at Rosa's La Scarbitta Ristorante at 215 Halstead Ave.

Merenda said she hopes the restaurant can reopen in a week. Most of the flooding went next door into the basement of the Town House Bar.

In related news Wednesday, Village of Mamaroneck crews were responding to water main breaks and main valve replacements along Boston Post Road and West Boston Post Road as well as adjoining sidestreets. Homes and businesses on about a dozen village streets encountered water service interruptions throughout the day.

Water service was expected to be interrupted Wednesday night from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday on West Boston Post Road from Richbell Road to Rockland Avenue, village officials said.
