Fundraising Continues for Larchmont Park

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- The Pine Brook Association is roughly half way toward reaching its fundraising goal for the renovation of the Pine Brook Park playground, Ralph Engel, one of its directors, said.

This will be the third renovation of the park, at the corner of Pine Brook Drive and Palmer Avenue, in about 35 years.

"It was really kind of clear that things were falling apart," said Sandy Constabile, co-president of the Pine Brook Association (PBA).

Since the last renovation in 1999, some equipment has been removed due to damage, but not replaced. The proposed renovation would add two sand digger toys, one of which is handicap accessible, ride-on bouncers, which will look like a chipmunk and a duck, a seesaw, a large sandbox, a three-part choo-choo wooden train and a multi-part pirate ship.

The PBA raised a separate $5,000 for the materials to install new benches and ground material for the updated playground and build a new, more stable support wall. The Village of Larchmont, which owns the park, will buy new trees to replace those that needed to be cut down late last year.

The new support wall, which Larchmont Nurseries will build, will eliminate some of the slope above it and the erosion that happens because of the slope, Engel said. Larchmont Nurseries, on 2315 Boston Post Road, is donating all of the work for these landscaping improvements and building the wall.

"This is an important park for those who live around here," Constabile said. "They take their kids there all the time. The kids make friends."
