LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Jessica Gardiner had a goal and an assist, leading Mamaroneck to a 3-0 win in its season-opener against visiting Bronxville at Flint Park.
The two-time defending Section 1 Class A champions received two assists from Molly Cohen and Nina Kumar made five saves. Juniors Kayla Robinson and Sarah Axelrad each scored their first varsity goals.
In their previous two meetings the last two years, Bronxville and Mamaroneck played to 0-0 scores.
Gardiner opened the scoring in the first half, deflecting in a Cohen drive off of a penalty corner. After inserting the ball to Cohen to initiate the corner, Gardiner went to post and got her stick on Cohens rip.
Gardiner assisted on Robinsons goal to open the second half. Mamaroneck racked up 18 penalty corners to Bronxvilles five.
I thought in the first half, Bronxville did a good job of beating us to the ball and that kept them in the game, Mamaroneck coach John Savage said. Bronxville did a good job on our corners, sending two fliers out, one to the ball and one to Jessica. Jessica did a good job of breaking up Bronxvilles plays.
Savage was especially happy for Robinson and Axelrad. Robinson is a starter on defense and Axelrad came off the bench to score.
Sarah hustles and gets to the right spot, Savage said. Kayla was great in the second half. She really stepped up.
