LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- For every alcoholic drink sold at Palmer's Crossing Wednesday night, the Larchmont restaurant will donate $1 to Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that fights illiteracy and gender inequity in developing countries.
The international organization has 53 chapters in 16 countries. It launched a Westchester Chapter in the fall of 2010, which will host its second annual "Beers for Books" event Wednesday.
Every dollar raised will put another book in the hands of a child in Laos, Vietnam, Napal, Tanzania, and other developing countries.
"Room to Read sees childrens education and literacy as an important way to break out of the cycle of poverty, said Karen Regan, co-leader of the Westchester chapter.
In November, Room to Read had a luncheon at Larchmont Shore Club, which raised $20,000 -- enough money to build three new libraries and serve three new school communities in developing countries.
