MAMARONECK, N.Y. Kate Lauzar usually observes at the Pelham Jewish Center, but Tuesday night, she accompanied her long-time friend Marcella Smith to Church of St. John and Paul for the annual Larchmont-Mamaroneck Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration.
Smith, a Larchmont resident, invited Lauzar to the 7:30 p.m. service, which featured six local houses of worship: two Catholic, two Protestant and two Jewish. "It's a nice opportunity to reflect before Thanksgiving," Lauzar said.
The Larchmont-Mamaroneck Interfaith Council holds this pre-Thanksgiving service at one of the six participating houses of worship every year. "This group tries very hard to look beyond our own borders and draw in as many representatives from different faiths as we can," said Mary Lee Berridge, member and past president of the Interfaith Council.
Pastors, reverends and rabbis led those who braved the weather in a celebration of community and music. The service featured several musical performances, the first of which featured Rabbi Mara S. Nathan and Reverend Julie Emery performing "Hinet Mah Tov."
John Ellanger enjoyed all of the performances, especially his daughter Caitlin's, as part of the St. John and Paul choir, which sang "Great is His Mercy".
"It's good when they have all of the kids choirs," said Leslie Ann Lopez, a Larchmont resident and member of the Larchmont Avenue Church choir named The Westchester Coral. "It's always fun to watch the kids."
The Interfaith Council meets once-a-month at The Church of St. John and Paul. The six participating houses of worship include the Church of St. John and Paul, Church of St. Augustine, Larchmont Avenue Church, Larchmont Temple, Beth Emeth Synagogue/Salum Yaakov, and St. John's Church.
