Kids Leap Into Leap Day at Larchmont Library

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Sophia Belisle celebrated her first leap day by leaping like a frog around the Larchmont Library Wednesday afternoon.

Sophia, 3, joined 16 other children to celebrate a day that comes just once every four years. Sophia's mother Lauren said she was happy to be able to celebrate the day with a fun family activity.

"Leap day is kind of special, but you don't know how to celebrate it," said Lauren, a Larchmont resident and mother of two.

Paulene Greeman led the kids in a series of activities centered on animals that leap, and the numbers 29, for the day of the month, and 366, for the one extra day in 2012. Greeman, a Larchmont resident, set lily pads with the numbers “2,” “9,” “3,” “6” and “6” and the kids, divided into teams, had to toss toy insects and frogs onto them. For lily pads with the number two, kids had to throw two toys onto it, and so on.

In the spirit of leap day, Greeman had the children leap in sacks while performing another activity.

Greeman's leap day program was one of many themed programs she creates as the founder of Creative Movement and Stories in Motion, as well as Paulene's Parties. The former Central School and Larchmont Avenue Church School teacher does programs throughout the school year at schools across Westchester.

"We're leaping into leap year," Greeman said.
