Larchmont Families Paint the Village Orange

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Kate Nolan reported for duty after school Friday for Larchmont's annual Halloween Window Painting.

Kate, 6, had the help of Halloween window painting veteran Margo Schneider, who used to babysit for the first grader at Chatsworth Avenue School. "Now she's just a friend of the family," said Kate's mom Maggie, who taught Schneider when she was in fourth grade.

Both Schneider, a senior at Mamaroneck High School, and Maggie looked on as Kate painted pumpkins and ghosts on the window of Allstate, which is one of more than 77 participating local businesses.

This year, the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the village Recreation Department to run the annual event, which Schneider remembers doing every year with her twin brother as children.

"Margo told us about this event, which makes Larchmont so festive," Maggie said. "It's fun for the kids. They get to contribute to the community in their own little way."

While Kate dressed up the Allstate window Friday, she will dress up as a cheerleader Saturday for the annual Ragamuffin Parade. "She's going to have a big 'C' on her uniform, which stands for Chatsworth and Cheerleader."

Elizabeth and Lauren Hallmark were also busy at work Friday, painting the the Julia B. Fee Sotheby's Realty on Palmer Avenue. "The kids love it," said their mother Gi. "They look forward to it. It's a nice local community event."

Children were assigned their storefronts Thursday night. Those who didn't paint their assigned store front Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. can still do so any time over the weekend. However, black paint is restricted.
