MAMARONECK, N.Y. Ellen Stipo made a stop at the Weaver Street Firehouse Thursday evening to donate 1 pint of blood, which will help three patients at Sound Shore Medical Center.
The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department teams with the Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle each year to collect blood for one of the lower Westchester area's major trauma centers, said Christine Robertson, blood driver coordinator at Sound Shore.
"All of the blood is used exclusively for our patients," Robertson said.
Sound Shore holds 39 blood drives a year, including annual drives at the Larchmont Fire Department, St. John and Paul and the Mamaroneck High School, and bi-annual drives at the Larchmont Temple and St. Augustine's Church. "That gives us roughly a third of our blood needs," Robertson said.
Stipo, whose grandson Ryan drew mice with Robertson while she gave blood, gave earlier this year at St. John and Paul. She said she used to donate bi-annually while working at the Queens Library. The 42-year Larchmont resident retired this past August and wanted to continue the good deed.
"One of my sons is a cop and I have four grandsons, so you never know when hospitals are going to need blood," Stipo said.
