Larchmont Store Loves Needlepoint, N.Y. Giants

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- The New York Giants flag that fills the storefront window next to the Larchmont Theater is a labor of love for the owners, passionate football fans who also happen to sell custom needlepoint pieces for a living.

Madalena Bruno and Betty Scanlon proudly hang the custom stitched flag to bring the Giants good luck as they play the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game this Sunday.

"If they go to the playoffs, the flag goes in the window," Scanlon said.

The two, both Larchmont residents, own Stitch By Stitch Needlepoint at 1971 Palmer Ave. They put up the flag throughout the Giants' 2007 Super Bowl run, partly because the wife of team owner John Mara is a frequent customer.

"We're very superstitious, and last time they played in the Super Bowl we had the flag up for all of their playoff games, and they won the Super Bowl," Bruno said. "So we have to make sure it's up for every game between now and then."

The Larchmont storeowners have also customized other accessories with the Giants name and logo, including pillows, key chains, ornaments and belts. Scanlon's husband has one, and according to Bruno, "men love the Giants belt."

While many are on pins and needle(points) for Sunday's showdown in San Francisco, Bruno and Scanlon are confident in their team.

“They're going to win," Scanlon said.
