Larchmont Takes First Step in Preparing for Irene

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck officials and organizations have sent e-mails throughout the day updating residents on the progression of Hurricane Irene, as well as what services will be available to them during the storm.

The owners of the parking lot at 745 E Boston Post Rd will be available Saturday and Sunday to residents who live in areas susceptible to flooding, according to a Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce e-mail. The parking lot, owned by the Graziano family, has been used in past storms because it is elevated from the street.

If evacuation is necessary, the town has secured the use of the Mamaroneck High School's Post Road gym as an evacuation center for all three municipalities, wrote Town Administrator Stephen Altieri in an e-mail Thursday afternoon.

"The Community Emergency Response Team is being activated today to provide staffing and the county is arranging a contact with the Red Cross to provide supplementary assistance," Altieri wrote.

"The town does have a Red Cross trailer that has a supply of cots, blankets and other supplies. At this point a time for opening the shelter has not been established."

Both villages and the town are advising residents to check the Larchmont and Mamaroneck websites regularly for updates, as well as the National Weather Service website.
