Larchmont's 'Save The Playhouse' Initiative Gets Deadline Extension

LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- A lot has happened in the few days since a group of concerned citizens canvased outside Larchmont Playhouse and its surrounding area armed with petitions to save the 85-year-old theater.

Their story, highlighted earlier by Daily Voice, has also been picked up by the Wall Street Journal and CBS News.

According to Ellen Zuckert, one of the leaders behind the Save the Playhouse campaign, the group now has a few more weeks to come up with the money to purchase the building. The deadline had previously been June 30.

The change is "all because the seller saw the overwhelming support of the community, as demonstrated through the online petition which now has close to 1,200 signers," said Zuckert.

The number of pledges has also gone up --  just over 300 people have pledged $250,000.

The theater is owned by United Development Co., a real-estate firm based in Texas.

The end result? According to Zuckert: "We will continue to gather pledges at savelarchmontmovies@gmail.com and ezuckert@gmail.com."
