The Westchester Joint Water Works are replacing a fire hydrant and a portion of a water main pipeline where Mamaroneck Ave and Old White Plains Rd converge.
The project began last Friday when workers from the Joint Water Works intended to replace the fire hydrant only. But when they excavated the sidewalk, they noticed a portion of the water main was in the way of the fire hydrant. They decided to remove that portion of the water main, which one worker said was very old, and move it about 10 feet over toward the street.
Monday afternoon, they had the portion of the street immediately surrounding the fire hydrant dug up, exposing the water main pipe. However, the pipe cannot be removed until 7 p.m. Monday, when the area's businesses close -- the water will be shut off.
After they remove the pipe, they will replace the fire hydrant. The workers at the site Monday said the project should be finished by noon Tuesday.
