MAMARONECK, N.Y. --Bridget Johanson was one of numerous student-athletes honored at the Mamaroneck Board of Education meeting Tuesday night in the Mamaroneck High School's tiered classroom.
Johanson, 15, and the Mamaroneck swim team took third place in the state championships for varsity girls swimming in November. She qualified for the championships, held at Erie Community College in Buffalo, with a time of 5:11.96 in the 500-yard freestyle, good for 20th in New York State.
"I'm just glad to be here with my teammates," Johanson said. "We worked hard this year and it's feels good to be recognized together."
On hand were Johanson's parents Phil and Lucy, whose older daughter Kelly had also made it to the state championships for swimming at Mamaroneck High School. Kelly is now a freshman at James Madison in Virginia.
Bari Suman, athletic director at Mamaroneck High School, read the names of honorees, while the respective team coaches presented players with the award and congratulations.
"It's a really nice way to recognize everyone for the fall season," said Suman, who noted Johanson's accomplishment was particularly impressive because she is just a sophomore.
Last year, only the girls varsity field hockey team was recognized. This year, the board recognized varsity football, girls swimming, boys and girls varsity soccer, volleyball, boys and girls cross country, tennis and cheerleading.
