Mamaroneck Board Supports Route 1 As A School Zone

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Mamaroneck Board of Education showed their support for lowering the speed limit on Boston Post Road at their study session Tuesday night.

The board voted unanimously in favor of endorsing legislation currently in the New York State Assembly - A8653 - and Senate - S6290 - that would designate a portion of Boston Post Road, which is a state road, a school zone. As a state road, the state must authorize the Town and Village of Mamaroneck to designate it a school speed zone.

With the legislation, the speed limit between Winthrop Avenue and the Town Center, on 740 W Boston Post Rd, would be reduced from 35 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour on school days between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

"We believe the 35 mile per hour speed limit is much too high and we need to protect the pedestrians in this area," said Kim Larsen, a member of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Safe Routes to School Committee, at the Feb. 15 Mamaroneck Town Board meeting .

Safe Routes to School is a national program officially established by the U.S. Congress in 2005. The Larchmont-Mamaroneck committee was established in 2008, and it has advocated for the re-designation since it began.

"This is a really good example of citizen advocacy, and hopefully we can get these measures passed and increase the safety for our students, and adults as well," Robin Nichinsky, president of the Mamaroneck Board of Education, said.

The legislation was introduced in the NYS Assembly by George Latimer and in the New York State Senate by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer.

Both the Town Board and Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees also passed resolutions supporting the legislation at recent meetings.
