Mamaroneck Fire Department Looking for Volunteers

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The Town Of Mamaroneck Fire Department (TMFD) fights fires 365 days a year, but on Saturday, they will take on low recruitment numbers by opening its truck bays and doors to local residents with the help of "Recruit NY."

The annual RecruitNY campaign, which began last year, seeks to increase the number of volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel statewide. Membership in volunteer fire departments has recently suffered due to the stagnant economy, among other factors, according to a TMFD press release.

"It is critically important to provide and maintain essential fire services in our communities," said David Jacobowitz, president of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY), in the release. "To that end, FASNY remains committed to helping out local departments recruit and retain their volunteers – the men and women who are always there to answer the call regardless of the hour or day."

The recruitment drive, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Weaver Street Firehouse, will feature events highlighting the duties and rewards of volunteering. A RecruitNY coordinator will be at each firehouse and can address questions or concerns regarding the program.

RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by FASNY, the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, the Association of Fire Districts of New York State, the Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York, the release said.
