Mamaroneck Fire Departments Play Ball at Carnival

James Shroeder wanted to even the score between Mamaroneck's two Fire Departments in their annual Fireman's Carnival softball game Tuesday, but the Village fell to the Town for the third time in four years 19-11.

The two departments use the softball game to draw their families and friends out for the first day of the carnival, which Shroeder said can be a little slow. Many already play in the Harbor Island softball league, which runs from May through August.

"It's a nice way to get together and kick off the spring," said Joseph Russo, first assistant chief of the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department, who pitched for his squad. His colleague, Lieutenant Andy Siano, was the captain.

"It's a great PR event and it helps support their fundraiser," said Siano, regarding the Village's annual Fireman's Carnival, which runs from June 28 through July 5 in the field in front of the Recreation Department on Harbor Island.

Tuesday's game marked the fourth year the two departments have played each other.
