MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Mamaroneck High School senior Joby Bernstein was named one of 300 national semifinalists in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search, the school announced Thursday.

Bernstein, 17, is in the school's Original Science Research program, a three-year science elective that students take in addition to their regular class schedule.

"They basically identify areas of science they're interested in working in," said Guido Garbarino, science teacher and head of the program. "They study it, they learn as much as they can about it, and then they conduct a project under the guidance of a professional scientist mentor who helps them to develop and carry out their work."

Bernstein, of Larchmont, incorporated several of his teachers and fellow students into his research project, titled "The Scaffolded Grader: Activation of Embodied Sensory Experiences Influences Abstract Judgment."

Each of the 300 semifinalists receives a $1,000 award, and his or her school also receives $1,000 to further excellence in science, math and engineering education. The semifinalists were selected from among 1,712 entrants representing 467 high schools in 42 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and two U.S. overseas schools.

The Society for Science & the Public , which runs the competition with Intel's sponsorship, will announce 40 finalists on Jan. 23. The finalists will attend the Intel Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C., in March, where they will undergo further judging and share $630,000 in awards.
