After its latest renovation completed by BKSK Architects in 2011, the Mamaroneck Library added energy efficient building systems, a green roof, outdoor air monitoring, limited toxic building materials and increased ventilation. It was also expanded by 13,000 square feet.
“Libraries are more popular than ever," said George Schieferdecker, a longtime Mamaroneck resident and lead architect of the Mamaroneck Library. "We wanted ours to be not only responsive to the needs of the community, but emblematic of our Village’s ambitions for a sustainable future."
Those sustainable designs helped the library achieved LEED Gold certification, becoming the sixth library in New York State to do so.
LEED certifications are awarded for green building strategies and practices. There are different certification levels for different building types, which include building design and construction, interior design and construction, building operations and maintenance, neighborhood development, and homes.
The Mamaroneck Library closed for three years during the last renovation. When it reopened the reading room was restored to its original design from when the library was built in 1927. From old to new, all of its materials were given radio frequency identification tags for self-checkout stations.
Both the children's and teen rooms have four computers and the reference area now has 12 computers.
Remarks and the unveiling will take outside of the main entrance on Prospect Avenue. Refreshments with the local leadership and project design team will follow in the lobby.
The plaque "… signifies the library's leadership in energy and environmental design," Schieferdecker said.
