MAMARONECK, N.Y. Mamaroneck resident James ONeill says that Gardens Lake, better known to locals as the Duck Pond, has become increasingly overgrown with weeds and filled with algae since a dredging project was completed.
We used to take the kids down there and now we stay away from it. The algae is one thing but all the weeds and plants are so overgrown, he said in an email.
He wanted to know whom to contact for answers to his questions: Why does the pond look more like a swamp now after the dredging project? Has anyone else complained about the look of the pond?
Town Administrator Stephen Altieri confirmed that the Duck Pond has marsh-like plants, and explained that they were purposely put there during the completion of the project.
The purpose of the marsh-like plantings is to improve the quality of the water, he said.
The water from Gardens Lake eventually runs into the Long Island Sound. According to Altieri, the plants help filter out natural and unnatural waste in the pond and also help with both the animal and aquatic life. The murkiness of the water is mostly likely due to the summer heat as well, he said.
I understand the algae blast due to weather and such, but no one has mowed or cut anything in months, ONeill responded in an email.
Altieri said many people liked the old, more pristine look of the pond, but the new look is more functional for the pond itself, and will help with flooding and help the Sound. He also noted that no formal complaints have been placed with the town.
Its a different look, but its still a nice look, he said.
