Mamaroneck Shares Block Party Draws Crowd Despite Heat

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Despite high temperatures in the 90s, Mamaroneck villagers and residents of surrounding towns came out in droves Thursday for the Mamaroneck Shares Block Party.

“So far, it’s been a great success,” said Ellen Hauptman, co-founder and chair of the event. “It will only get more crowded as it cools off some more.”

After cars were directed away from Mamaroneck Avenue, people began to trickle in, slowly growing into a busy crowd. For children, a bouncy castle, a trampoline and hula hoops were available for fun, as well as a face painter and a Zumba instructor. Some children even had an opportunity to soak Mayor Norman Rosenblum in the dunk tank.

“It’s a block party that gets the restaurants and businesses out, but also raises money for charities,” said Tara Shanes, founder and chair of the Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk. “It really shows that people care about this because it's 90 degrees and people are still out.”

Mamaroneck Shares is a four-part block party event that raises money for local Mamaroneck nonprofit organizations, including the research walk, Keep aBreast, the Mamaroneck Emergency Medical Service and the Mamaroneck-Larchmont Student Aid Fund.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Kathy Catanzariti, who was selling her handmade knit and crochet items. “They raise money for charity, which is nice, and it brings people to the village.”

All of the art and food vendors are from the village, keeping the block party as community-oriented as possible.

“It’s a good way to get out into the community for us,” said Alexis Cohen of the Greater Wellbeing office. “And it’s a fun event for the village.”

Mamaroneck Shares has more events on July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 21. The suggested donation is $1 per person, which goes directly to the charities. The upcoming events will feature some new activities.

“We are going to do some surprises in the next upcoming event,” said Hauptman.
