Mamaroneck Sports Teams Need Community Support

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The seven sports teams cut from the Mamaroneck School District budget in 2009 have not been reinstated in this year's budget Superintendent of Schools Robert Shaps said at the annual budget review Saturday.

Despite being cut, the sports programs have continued thanks to parents who have raised the necessary funds independent of the district each of the past two years. They include: the second teams for modified field hockey and junior varsity boys soccer, the modified teams for volleyball, softball and girls basketball and freshman baseball and boys basketball.

"The full amount would be approximately $90,000 to fund all teams and it would be necessary for us to have that as a donation prior to Aug. 1, because we do have to set schedules, practice times, inform other communities who have participating inter-scholastic team competition," Shaps said.

Last year, Shaps set the benchmark at $30,000, which a group of parents, led by Robin Levine of Larchmont, was able to raise just one week before JV soccer tryouts in mid-August. "This is another instance, because of budgetary constraints, that we've had to rely on the generosity of members of our community to self-fund some of these programs," Robin Nichinsky, president of the school board, said.

The school board met Saturday to review the superintendent's recommended 2012-2013 budget line-by-line.
