MAMARONECK, N.Y. Brett Poniros has been known to start a football game for his Mamaroneck Tigers at running back, ditch his gear for a drum set to play with the high school's drum line during half time, then suit back up for the second half.
Poniros, 17, said he has "only" done it three times in two years. But, he doesn't stop there. He also plays ice hockey in the winter and baseball in the spring, and was just named the Con Edison Athlete of the Week.
On Jan. 27, he and Michael Chiapparelli, ice hockey and baseball coach at Mamaroneck High School, sat down for an interview with Bob Wolf, the longest-running TV and radio sports broadcast announcer.
The three-sport athlete and member of The Force, the school's drum line, was named a team captain for football and ice hockey, and said he hopes to complete his senior year as captain of the baseball team.
"I love having the responsibility on my shoulders and being a role model for the rest of my teammates," Poniros said.
The Mamaroneck resident and goalie for the ice hockey team is currently on the march to the playoffs, with his team at 9-7, having won five of their last six. On Jan. 18, he stopped 36 shots to shutout Rye, the sixth-ranked team in New York State. The 3-0 win was his third shutout of the season, all on the road.
"Brett excels at all three sports he plays, and does a great job in the classroom, a great job in our community and is just one of the leaders of our school," said Chiapparelli, during their interview on WFAS. "He does whatever he can to make the team better."
Poniros is devoted to ice hockey right now, but said baseball is his favorite sport and hopes to continue playing in college. Franklin and Marshall College told him Tuesday that he has a spot on their baseball team next season. But, he is reserving any final decisions until he hears back from Duke University.
"My dream has always been to go to Duke," he said. "I think I'll cross my fingers for that."
Each week, a panel of athletic directors and coaches select the winner from a Westchester or Putnam school based on academic achievements, leadership, citizenship, and school and community activities.
