The Mamaroneck School Board gave Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Shaps a vote of confidence this week by unanimously approving a new five-year contract at its final business meeting of the school year.
The Board cited Shaps strong performance this past year in a press release issued Thursday.
"We are very pleased with Dr. Shaps performance as superintendent," said Board President Rick Marsico, who lives in Mamaroneck. "His educational leadership and financial acumen enabled the Board to propose a budget for next year that preserves programs for our children and reduces the tax levy for our taxpayers.
Shaps began at Mamaroneck July 1, 2010 and had two years left on his original three-year contract.
It takes several years to effectuate meaningful change, and we believe Dr. Shaps is the right superintendent for the task, said Board Vice President Robin Nichinsky in a statement.
During his first year Shaps has hired a new principal, strengthened the teacher evaluation process and developed capital projects at Memorial Field and Hommocks, according to the board.
