Mamaroneck Town Budget Vote Wednesday

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The town council will meet Dec. 14 to adopt the 2012 town budget, which may exceed the tax levy limit, but do so legally.

The board overrode the tax levy limit at its Dec. 7 regular meeting. The tax cap law has a mechanism that allows a town to override the limit on the amount of real property taxes that it can levy through a super majority. The board voted 4 to 1, in favor.

Prior to that vote, Stephen Altieri, town administrator, presented the preliminary 2012 budget, which the board was able to bring under the allowable tax levy through cuts to hours at the Hommocks pool and three crossing guard positions. However, the crossing guard positions may be restored in the final budget thanks to the override, as well as strong opposition from local PTA presidents, Altieri said.

The proposed 2012 budget for the town is $28,441,243—a 2.5 percent increase from last year. The 2012 budget for Town of Mamaroneck Fire District No. 1, which must be voted on and then adopted separately, is $2,899,64—a 5.5 percent increase from last year.

The actual increase in taxes for residents in the villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont may be 1.2 percent – or $5.60, and 6.2 percent – or $351.60 for town residents, based on an average assessed home of $20,000.

The town board will vote on the town and fire district budgets at 8 p.m. in the Courtroom. You can also watch the vote live on LMC-TV, channel 76 for Cablevision and 35 for Verizon. Click here for complete schedules .
