Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Receives EPA Environmental Award

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – After a trip to Boston, Mass. last week, Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson returned with an Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Merit awards were given to groups and individuals who have contributed to protecting the environment and raising awareness. Seligson was recognized for her work as New York co-chair of the citizens advisory committee of the Long Island Sound Study (LISS), along with Curt Johnson, her co-chair.

"I'm honored to be recognized by the EPA and thank all of the members of the LISS Citizens Advisory Committee for their commitment to working together to create 'Soundvision,'" Seligson said in a statement.

The Long Island Sound Study is dedicated to improving water quality in the Sound and bringing various community, educational and volunteer groups together to develop the "Soundvision," a community blueprint for clean water, healthy habitats and economically strong communities.

This blueprint includes themes and goals for the Sound, as well as steps to achieve them, ways to measure success and an outreach strategy to connect with the entire Long Island Sound community.

"As stewards, all of these recipients are making real and lasting differences in communities across our beautiful region," said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England office. "Whether it's finding innovative ways to safeguard our water resources or conserving the energy our communities use each day, each individual has advanced our mission to protect human health and the environment."

Awards were also given in the following categories: individual, business (including professional organizations), local, state or federal government, and environmental, community, academia or nonprofit organization. There were a total of 100 nominees for the various awards.

The event, which has taken place annually since 1970, was held in Boston’s Faneuil Hall.
