Mamaroneck Tri-M Students Perform at Sarah Neuman

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Lyra Harada, and several other students, earned 15 service points toward her membership in the Mamaroneck High School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society for her performance at Mamaroneck's Sarah Neuman Center Monday.

Harada, 16, is the recording secretary of the international group, which gives students like her another outlet. "It's another way of expressing yourself," she said. The senior is also a member of the symphonic orchestra, the second chamber orchestra and the string quartet, for which she plays piano.

Monday, Harada, of Mamaroneck, played Ludwig van Beethoven's “Pathetique Sonata, 2nd Movement” on the piano. She then sang Giacomo Puccini's "Un Bel di, vedremo" from “Madama Butterfly.”

"It's like a breath of fresh air to see these young people," said Stanley Marlin, a Rye resident who is a patient at Sarah Neuman. "It brings back memories."

Tri-M Music Honor Society is similar to the National Honor Society, but for music, said Dina Madden, music coordinator for Mamaroneck High School. "It's normally the best kids in the music department who apply," she said.

The program used to be for grades 10 through 12, but recently was opened up to freshman too. Students who apply and meet the criteria have to earn 150 service points before induction. Once they become a member, they must maintain a certain amount of service points, which are earned through performances, bakes sales and other service events.

"Part of the goal is to promote music throughout the community," said Madden, who coordinates about three of these informal recitals each year.

Sarah Blunt, 16, was just recently inducted into Tri-M. Monday, she performed "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone. "I think it's really important to be a part of the music department," she said.

Freshman Ellie and Karen Seid, of Larchmont, said they are happy to be a part of Tri-M because it has eased their transition into high school by sharing an interest with students older than them.
