MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- On the steam of her second-straight NYS Indoor Track Championship win, Anima Banks finished third in the National Championships this past weekend.
The Mamaroneck High School senior recorded a personal best 2:08.77 in the 800 meter run at the New Balance National Track Championship at the 168th Street New Balance Armory Sunday. It was also the third fastest time in the U.S. for a high school student in the 800 meter run this year.
Just one second ahead of Banks at 2:07.26 was Mary Cain of Bronxville. Ajee Wilson of Neptune, NJ finished first with a time of 2:06.58.
"Anima was right behind those two," said Bob Morrissey, the Mamaroneck track coach. "She's certainly not resting on all of the success she's had, she's really pushing and working hard and trying to improve on what it was she had done last year. It's been an amazing ride for this indoor season."
Monday marks the beginning of Varsity and JV spring sports, including the outdoor track season. But those who competed at the tail end of the indoor season, like Banks, will take the week off and prepare for the rest of their year.
Banks also anchored Mamaroneck's relay team in the National Section 2 4x800 relay Saturday. While the extremely young team finished third in the NYS 4x800 relay , they finished last in the Nationals with a time of 9:38.64.
