The grant was awarded to specifically support the center's "Building Our Future" program, which provides literacy programs and computer classes, Karen Galbo at the PUCF said.

"Through our foundation, we have three areas of focus: youth development, community development and affordable housing," Galbo said. "This particular agency and the program we're supporting would fall under community development."

The HRC was founded in 1998 and has grown from an information clearinghouse to a community-based organization that provides direct services to and advocates for immigrants and low-income families in need.

In the past year, the center served approximately 3,500 adults and children in three primary areas: case management and social services, educational programs and workshops and job placement for men and women seeking employment.

"They're a small organization, but they're doing wonderful work," Galbo said. "Our focus is to support efforts that are going to advance education, self-sufficiency and economic independence. We really felt that this program was a good fit for all of those initiatives."

PUCF, the philanthropic arm of the People's United Bank, gave out $46,500 in its most recent found of funding. It covers six states and received almost 120 grant requests.

Some of the other recipients included Safe Harbors of the Hudson, Community Housing Innovations, Yonkers Partners in Education, and El Centro Hispano.

"We're really looking for those organizations that are making a significant impact in our communities," Galbo said.
