MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Due to deteriorating conditions of a 12-inch water main that crosses above the Metro-North Railroad tracks, the North Barry Avenue Bridge was closed to traffic on Thursday and Friday for emergency water main repairs.

Public works crews replaced a failing section of water main that was originally installed in 1921, Village Manager Richard Slingerland said.

Slingerland told Daily Voice, "The emergency repair was prompted by gradual wear through the water main, which started out as a slow-dripping leak over the past two months, which accelerated into a spraying leak this week. The repair is necessary before the entire 12-inch main cracks and fails."

Slingerland said the approximate cost of repair is about $100,000 to $150,000. Final cost will be determined by labor and materials, he said.

While the North Barry Avenue Bridge is closed, the closest crossings under or over the Metro-North Railroad Tracks are Jefferson Avenue in Mamaroneck and West Street in Harrison.

The failing water main runs atop the North Barry Avenue Bridge and over the New Haven Line tracks, Slingerland said.

The Westchester Joint Water Works, a joint agency serving the Village of Mamaroneck, Town of Mamaroneck and Town of Harrison, which operates the Village's water system, oversaw the construction with engineers and contractors, in coordination with the Metro-North Railroad, Con Edison, the Mamaroneck Police Department, the Mamaroneck Public Works Department, the Westchester County Health Department, and other involved and cooperating agencies and Village Departments, Slingerland added.

The Westchester Joint Water Works assured village officials that one water customer, a laundromat on North Barry Avenue, will be without water service for the duration of construction. However, other water customers may have temporary loss of service while the work is being done, Slingerland cautioned in an email.

Friday evening, Slingerland reported: "At this time the North Barry Avenue Water Main installation is complete, and the bridge over Metro North is fully open to carry two-way traffic. All customers are on temporary water supply. Additional logistical work will be required to complete the flushing of the main before it can be put into service.  Road traffic and bridge traffic at that location may be affected sporadically as the paving is completed and other work is completed, such as pouring concrete to finish the sidewalks."

There will not be a further long-term day-long closure of the road, Slingerland said.
