Mamaroneck's Weaver Street Bridge to Be Repaired

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The heavily trafficked Weaver Street Bridge will be closed for two-to-three months sometime next year while the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) replaces its deck, said Stephen Altieri, administrator for the Town of Mamaroneck.

The Weaver Street Bridge, an overpass for Interstate-95, is one of 23 in the Hudson Valley and 115 statewide, that the DOT has identified as in need of repair. The $1.246 million project is part of the New York Works Program, which will fund a total of $1.2 billion in similar projects statewide. 

"This bridge is a lifeline to Larchmont and Mamaroneck residents who come to and from these communities," said Assembly member George Latimer (D-Rye) in a statement. "I'm pleased to see the work will be undertaken as soon as possible."

The program adds to the $1.6 billion already allocated in this year's state budget for road and bridge projects, including $212 million to address bridge deck and structural replacement or rehabilitation needs.

"The cornerstone of this budget is the New York Works program, a new and smarter strategy for putting New Yorkers back to work by rebuilding our aging infrastructure and helping put our state's economy back on track," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in a statement.

Latimer praised the plan, which will coordinate these projects across 45 agencies and authorities.

The DOT selected the Weaver Street Bridge for this program because it was in a "deteriorated condition and needs replacement," Altieri said.

The project, Altieri said, is expected to begin sometime in the spring or early summer of 2013.

"We asked them to delay the project because they're evidently going to close several other bridges, so we were just going to end up with a traffic nightmare," he said.

The Rockland Avenue Bridge, a potential detour while the Weaver Street Bridge is closed next year, will, itself, be closed for a similar project this summer.

"We did not want both bridges closed at the same time," Altieri said.
