Seeger will address what it means to be a creative artist in times of social upheaval and social change, and will examine the roles that writing and language have played throughout his career, a press release from the college said. He will be featured in the conversation with Mark Nowak, director of the Manhattanville’s Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program.
"Pete Seeger is one of the few giants in American folk song history,” Nowak said in a statement. “He has, quite simply, made some of the most significant recordings in the past half century. Seeger’s songs have inspired generations of activists and profoundly addressed the universal human condition.”
The 94-year-old resident of Beacon, N.Y. is internationally known as the author or co-author of folk song classics such as “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “If I Had a Hammer,” and “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Locally, he is involved in the environmental organization Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, which he co-founded in 1966.
The event is free to the public. It will be held at 7 p.m. in the West Room in Manhattanville College’s Reid Hall. The college is at 2900 Purchase St., Purchase.
