During the morning commute, a series of explosions could be heard on Harrison Street in New Rochelle after Con Edison equipment caught fire and combusted, sending flames and smoke billowing in the area shortly after 8 a.m.
Firefighters swiftly responded from the nearby station, alerting Con Edison crews that their assistance would be needed. As a precaution, residents at two apartment buildings were evacuated from the area due to high carbon-monoxide readings.
Fire crews were able to clear the scene by the afternoon, though Con Edison was still working on a pair of manholes. No injuries were reported.
