The staggering figure includes settlements from five accidents that injured dozens of commuters and cost the lives of 12 people, according to the report.

Since 2013, the largest payout of $31.9 million has gone to settle claims of injured passengers involved in the Hudson Line train that derailed near Spuyten-Duyvil in Dec. 2013 when the engineer fell asleep, according to the story. Four people died during the accident.

The next largest settlement of $21.7 million was paid out in settlements and legal fees for the May 2013 derailment of a New Haven line train near Bridgeport, Conn. Seventy-three passengers were injured when the train came off the rails and hit another train, reported The Journal News/lohud.com.

Six people lost their lives during the accident when a northbound Harlem Line train crashed into an SUV at the Commerce Street crossing.

So far, 286 claims have been filed for three accidents including the Spuyten-Duyvil crash, the Bridgeport and the Valhalla crash. Of those, 176 have been settled, Metro North told The Journal News/lohud.com.
