Murray Music Program's Growth Visible on Stage

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – Karen Astorina was proud as she watched her two children Evelyn and A.J. perform in the Murray Avenue School Winter Concert Tuesday night.

Both students are in the orchestra, which numbers 89 in total, said Amy Rosen, orchestra director for Murray and Chatsworth elementary schools. Murray's band has 50 members and chorus has more than 90 members.

"I think that all three performing groups have some of the largest numbers that they've ever had in the group," said Rosen, who has worked in the Mamaroneck School District since 1979.

Back then, Rosen would instruct the orchestra for all four elementary schools but now only covers two because of the steady growth in numbers. "I think that all the performing groups have been extremely successful," she said.

Orchestra members, made up of third through fifth graders, practice once before school and once during school each week. Only fourth and fifth graders performed in Tuesday's winter concert because the third graders are still beginners, Rosen said. The band is fourth and fifth grade, and the chorus is fifth grade only.

"The kids really do feel a sense of accomplishment from this," said Astorina, a Larchmont resident. "They really try hard and most of these kids take lessons outside of school."
