State police have released detailed information on the early Saturday morning motor vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old Westchester resident who was a member of the SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team.

Douglas Alvarez of Mamaroneck died as a result of injuries in the Interstate 88 crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. in the town of Maryland near Exit 18 in Otsego County, about 25 miles west of SUNY Cobleskill. Five other SUNY Cobleskill students who were occupants in the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The vehicle, which was traveling eastbound toward Cobleskill, exited the roadway and rolled over several times after entering the center median before it came to a stop in the westbound land, where it was hit by another vehicle, according to state police.

Alvarez, who was ejected from the vehicle, was transported to Albany Medical Center and later succumbed to his injuries, according to state police.

Alcohol was not a contributing factor to the accident, police said. The crash investigation is ongoing.

The five other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. The operator of the second, uninvolved vehicle, was not injured, state police said.

Alvarez, a freshman, was a 5-foot-10, 150-pound defenseman on the SUNY Cobleskill soccer team, who played in 11 of the team's 19 games this past fall.

Support and counseling will be provided Sunday for SUNY Cobleskill students on Sunday.

Alvarez was majoring in Business Administration, the college said.
