Raccoon Captured in Larchmont Had Rabies

The Westchester Department of Health issued a rabies alert for Larchmont residents Wednesday after test results confirmed a raccoon , captured Monday, was rabid .The acting commissioner of health for Westchester County Dr. Cheryl Archbald urged residents to contact the Department of Health immediately if they believe they or a pet had contact with this raccoon, which was first seen on Sherwood Drive early Monday morning and captured a few hours later on Boston Post Road.“Anyone bitten by a rabid animal , or having contact with its saliva, may need to receive immediate rabies vaccination,” Archbald wrote in a press release Wednesday.According to the Department of Health, the raccoon displayed neurological signs of rabies, which can include extremely aggressive or extremely timid behavior, as well as frothing at the mouth.
