MAMARONECK, N.Y. March is American Red Cross Month, and the Mamaroneck High School Red Cross Club will celebrate by holding a Red Cross flag-raising ceremony at Mamaroneck Town Center at 4 p.m. Tuesday, said Eli Russ, club president.
Additionally, the ceremony is in recognition of the partnership between the American Red Cross and the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Community Emergency Response Team during Tropical Storm Irene.
Russ, a junior, was one of 13 Red Cross Club members to volunteer at the emergency shelter that the Red Cross set up at the high school's Post Road gym, along with local Emergency Response Team members.
"He's so passionate about the Red Cross mission, and it's wonderful to see it in someone so young," said Michael de Vulpillieres, media relations manager for the Red Cross in Greater New York.
During the Aug. 29 storm, parts of the village and town of Mamaroneck were ordered to evacuate, and more than 300 residents took up quarters in the emergency shelter. The shelter stayed open several days after the storm passed for those whose homes or apartments had flood damage.
"It's very important to recognize community volunteers," said Russ, a member of the Red Cross National Youth Council. "This event is also about trying to encourage others to fulfill their civic duty and hopefully make the world a better place."
