Residents Apathetic Toward Rye Town Elections

RYE, N.Y. – Jenny Park chuckled when asked if she could answer a few questions about the upcoming town council elections on Nov. 8.

“I wish I knew more,” Park said outside of Costco in downtown Port Chester. “I’m just so unsure about the issues.” She added, “I get the pamphlets in the mail but those don’t help much.”

Voters will elect a town supervisor, two town council members, a town justice, a receiver of taxes and a superintendent of highways. But despite several races, most Rye residents, including those from Port Chester and Rye Brook, have been apathetic about the general election. Outside the Rye Ridge Deli, one resident said, “To be honest, I don’t know too much about it,” but said he still planned on casting a vote.

The Town of Rye is comprised of the villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook and the Rye Neck section of the Village of Mamaroneck. For elected seats in the town's government, incumbent Supervisor Joe Carvin (R,C,I) is being challenged by Democrat Rico Dos Anjos. In the town council race, incumbent Robert Nioras (R,C,I) and running mate Christina Collins are running against Democrats John W. Reavis Jr. and Gary Sullivan.

The other contested races in town are the run for receiver of taxes. Incumbent Nicholas Mecca, a Democrat, is being challenged by Janusz Richards, who has the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines and Superintendent of Highways Thomas Nardi (D) being challenged by John DeCrescenzo (R,C,I).

Town Justice Anthony Provenzano (D,R,C, I) is running unopposed.

Despite her uncertainty about who to vote for, Park said she still plans to vote on Tuesday.
