Rye Neck Kids Get Settled on First Day of School

RYE NECK, N.Y. -- Tomas Fernandez wasn't thrilled about his first day at F.E. Bellows Elementary School, but was happy that, for the first time, he was in the same class as his best friend.

The fifth grader's mother, Fay, picked up Tomas and his friend, Joe, after school, which ran from 8:40 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for grades three through five. The first full day for grades one through nine is Wendesday.

Mari Noerschen couldn't wait to start first grade at Daniel Warren Elementary School, which held a morning orientation for kindergarten through second grade. While waiting with her mother at the high school to have her younger sister Sally, 3, registered for kindergarten next year, Noerschen was eager to share her first-day stories.

"I really like my Daniel Warren School a lot," said Noerschen, who set up her cubby and familiarized herself with classroom 303. "My favorite part was when my teacher gave out the magic pennies. I have 12 of them."

Similarly, Amanda Lovallo, who attended a 45-minute orientation at the Rye Neck High School, is looking forward to the start of the school year.

"I just like it because it gives me something to do," said Lovallo, a 10th grader.
