LARCHMONT, N.Y. Claire Capaldi added a few new books to her personal reading list at the Chatsworth Avenue School's annual fall book fair, which opened Monday.
During school, the Larchmont resident's fifth grade class visited the elementary school's gymnasium, where books had replaced baskets. Capaldi bought "Flutter" by Erin Moulton, which falls into her favorite genre, realistic fiction.
"She reads a lot of contemporary fiction," said her mom Joan, who met her daughter after school to look through even more books at the fair. "The kids already came in with their class, but I love the book fair, so I wanted to come, too."
For Joan, who also has a child in Hommocks Middle School, this was book fair number eight at Chatsworth.
"It's great," she said. "It encourages reading for them. You can come in with $3 and buy a book. They have all different levels of reading."
The book fair showcased everything from chapter books to the "Guinness Book of World Records 2012," which Leslie Roy noted is always a popular item. Her son Dylan, 8, thumbed through some of the records, including most straws fit into the mouth.
"I like them because there's always something interesting," Dylan said.
Gavin Zinthini, 10, likes anything sports related, including the "And Me" chapter book series. The fifth grader is currently reading "Babe Ruth And Me."
Shea Betten, 11, is currently reading "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which, she said, is quickly becoming her favorite book in the series.
"We love coming to it every year," Roy said. "It's great for Christmas presents and the kids get so excited about it."
